Unicompartmental Knee Replacements
Unicompartmental or Partial knee replacement represents one of the most important aspects of our minimally invasive knee surgery program. It has been extremely successful in providing a subset of patients with isolated disease with enhanced recovery and early return to function. It is a conserving procedure that targets only the diseased area and leaves the remaining healthy cartilage and ligaments alone.
It is critical to recognize that arthritis affects each individual uniquely. Some patients will have isolated knee arthritis rather than more extensive changes. While patients with these extensive changes are excellent candidates for total knee replacement, patients with isolated changes are more appropriate to be treated with partial knee replacement. Partial knee replacement targets resurfacing of only the damaged area. The best candidates for this surgery are those close to their ideal body weight with isolated knee arthritis, minimal deformity, good motion, and no inflammatory disease.
