Michael J. Harris, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is originally from Manhattan Beach, California and attended Chadwick School in Palos Verdes Peninsula. He attended Northwestern University and graduated with a degree in biomedical engineering with a solid mechanics sub-specialization. He obtained his medical degree from the University of California-Davis School of Medicine where he was awarded the Paul R. Lipscomb, M.D. Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed a surgical internship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Affiliated Hospitals of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Dr. Harris had fostered a strong interest in total joint replacement dating back to 1992, when he first worked with Dr. Dorr at USC University Hospital. However, during his residency, he became very interested in musculoskeletal oncology and limb salvage surgery as well as complex total joint reconstruction. His interests led him to Boston, where he completed the Musculoskeletal Tumor Fellowship sponsored by the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He then returned to Los Angeles to complete an additional fellowship in total joint reconstruction under Dr. Dorr.
Dr. Harris has an interest in minimally-invasive techniques to treat osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, including arthroscopic techniques and uni-compartmental knee replacement. In addition, he has interest in limb salvage surgery, primary bone and soft-tissue sarcomas, metastatic malignancies of bone, and skeletal complications of chemotherapy/radiation treatment. He attempts to tailor individual treatment plans for all of his patients with the goal of restoring function and relieving pain as quickly and completely as possible to improve quality of life.
